Procedure Details

Dr. Modh uses a no scalpel technique to help reduce pain and bleeding. First the skin is anesthetized with a small amount of lidocaine. This may create a quick poking sensation and slight burning sensation but this is just the anesthesia working.

Since we do not use a scalpel, a sharp spreading tool is used to make a small puncture site in the skin. A small circular clamp is then used to grasp the vas deferens. Very carefully the tissue surrounding the vas deferens is freed and the sheath covering the vas deferens is opened.

Once the vas deferens has been isolated, a segment is excised. The proximal end (toward the belly) is cauterized and tied off with an absorbable suture. The end by the testicle is left open. Finally a layer of tissue is placed between the two ends to prevent them from growing back together.

The same steps are repeated on the other side as well. Often the procedure can be completed through a single incision but sometimes a second puncture site is needed.

At the end some antibiotic ointment and dry gauze is applied.

Again the whole procedure generally takes about 15 minutes.
